Dumped ice to make room for sap. Trees ran more than we thought overnight on Feb 27 into Feb 28. Many buckets ¾ full while some were full. It was ice now because of the cold Feb 28 to Mar 2. We estimate it was 300 gallons of sap.

On the 27^th the trees started running late afternoon and ran into the night while the temperature dropped. If we started collecting at 11:00 PM we could have collected liquid sap because the temperature dropped below freezing around Midnight. By morning, temperature was in the 20s. But it’s not feasible to collect at night: it’s dark and we don’t have help. So we got ice.

We expect sap this week. Big blocks if ice take many days to melt in the buckets. Leaving ice in the buckets meant no room for new sap. At 12:45 PM we headed into the woods to dump ice from buckets. There was some melt so we saved a pint to a quart of sap while dumping the remaining ice block. The remaining sap should be sweeter.

By 2:00 PM the sun came out. Trees started dripping. They will drip into the night again. Low 30s tonight won’t produce ice. Tomorrow should be favorable for sap again.

Teens overnight. Sunny and 30s. Checked the woods at Noon. Still frozen. We need warmer weather. 40s and even low 50s forecast this week.

Teens at night. 20’s during the day. The weather pattern changes this week.

It was low 50s late afternoon. Trees were dripping and dripped into the night as temperatures fell. Some buckets are 1/2 to 2/3 full. By morning temperatures in the upper 20s and fell to the mid 20s during the day. Sap is now ice.

Upper 20s overnight. Sunny and mid 40s today. Tree pressure at 16 PSI. Some dripping, but the ground is still cold.

Temperature drops tonight to low 20s. Temperature tomorrow in mid 20s. Next week before we get favorable conditions.

Mid teens overnight. Sunny and low 30s during the day. But felt cold. Tomorrow’s forecast is the upper 40s low 50s. But Saturday returns to cold weather.

Started snowing yesterday afternoon around 4:00 PM; done by 5:15 PM.. Close to 2” of snow in 1 ½ hours. It was a heavy snow.

Cold now. 20 overnight. Sunny and teens this afternoon. Low teens tonight. Starting Friday, temperatures warm.

20 overnight. 33 during the day, but cloudy and windy made it feel colder.

These are the weather forecasts we used to decide to tap last week. They are from the National Weather Service (NWS) and show temperatures trending warmer than normal.

We monitor three weather services: NWS, AccuWeather and Google Weather. All three forecast trending warmer temperatures. Actual temperatures and precipitation will always vary from forecasts so this cold dip isn’t out of the ordinary.

High teens overnight. Low 20s today. Cloudy again. The week ahead is cold with some nights in the mid to low teens. The long term forecasts fro NOAA still show temperatures trending above normal. Cold weather doesn’t affect the taps as much as warm weather.

Cloudy and snow flurries all day. Lower 20s overnight. Upper 20s during the day. The R/O room was at 50 with the heater on.
