We got the sap run we were hoping for after the cold of yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0 This morning started sunny but very windy.\u00a0\u00a0 Got up to the high 30s quickly.\u00a0\u00a0 We checked the buckets in the morning.\u00a0 Not much happening.\u00a0 The spouts were wet but not running.\u00a0\u00a0 It looked like the cold wind would inhibit the sap run.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 By Noon the wind quieted down and it warmed rapidly.\u00a0\u00a0 Got into the low 60s.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The trees responded.\u00a0\u00a0 By 2:30 PM visitors were reporting buckets \u00bd full to full.\u00a0\u00a0 So we got the tractor and set out to collect.\u00a0\u00a0 Picked up 420 gallons of sap.\u00a0\u00a0 This puts as at 2020 gallons of sap for the season so far. <\/p>\n
We also bottled this afternoon.\u00a0 We had a lot of help so the crew went out collecting while we stayed to bottle.\u00a0 29 quarts.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The wind did bring down a \u201cwidow maker\u201d from a tree.\u00a0 Broken tree branches that are caught in the tree and have not yet fallen are called widow makers because if they fall on you then can kill you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Husbands were the ones working in the woods so the wife would become a widow if one of these branches fell on him.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One tree by the sugar house had a large widow maker.\u00a0\u00a0 We have been cautious of it all season and were hoping it would come down safely.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometime overnight the wind did bring down most of it.\u00a0\u00a0 There is still one branch caught in the tree.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n
