Into the woods by 9:00 AM.\u00a0 By 9:30 we had a boil.\u00a0 But there was a build up of nitre on the pan that caused the syrup pan to foam up while boiling.\u00a0 Its difficult to boil hard when there is a constant fear of boiling over.\u00a0\u00a0 The only thing to do is take the pan off and clean it.\u00a0 So this morning was a false start.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After the pan was cleaned boiling was much better.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
We took a batch off the evaporator about 11:30 AM.\u00a0 We were hoping for a second batch today too.\u00a0\u00a0 We had to mange that carefully because we did not have a lot of sap in the tanks.\u00a0 We pulled the siphon in order to get the batch done sooner.\u00a0 With the siphon out no fresh sap came into the pan and it could boil down to destiny.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 By 5:30 PM we took the batch off.\u00a0 There was just enough sap in the tanks to fill the evaporator at the end of the day.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Then we finished and bottled both batches.\u00a0 22 quarts 1 pint and 1 250 ml bottle.\u00a0 We now have about 214 quarts:\u00a0 53 \u00bd gallons.<\/p>\n
We did head out with the tractor and milk cans to collect what ever sap might be there.\u00a0\u00a0 A few taps are running some yet.\u00a0\u00a0 We ended up with 30 gallons of sap.\u00a0\u00a0 This is pretty much it.\u00a0 We will likely pull the taps starting tomorrow.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
The weather forecast for the week is for much warmer weather.\u00a0 By the end of the week into the 70s.\u00a0\u00a0 That is not sap weather.\u00a0\u00a0 Its pretty clear this will be the end of the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
