The sun made an appearance today.\u00a0\u00a0 It was about 2:00 PM when it emerged.\u00a0 The fog lifted, the clouds broke and the sky cleared.\u00a0 And we saw a sunset.\u00a0 The day did start foggy again.\u00a0 And it did not freeze last night.\u00a0 No sap.\u00a0 The forecast for the coming days is sunny with highs around 50.\u00a0\u00a0 It may or may not freeze at night.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
This is a difficult weather pattern.\u00a0 It seems too early to think about the season ending.\u00a0 Yet without a return to freezing nights we are facing that possibility.\u00a0\u00a0 If it does end, it would be the worst season in decades.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Its sobering to think of that.\u00a0\u00a0 But\u00a0 we can not control mother nature. \u00a0<\/p>\n
We may look into ways we might freshen the taps after a long warm period like this.\u00a0 The tap hole is a wound to the tree.\u00a0 And a healthy tree will try to heal the wound.\u00a0\u00a0 The first part of healing is to stop the bleeding; sap dripping from a spout is the tree bleeding.\u00a0 Micro organisms start to seal off the cut veins in the wood.\u00a0 It forms a layer in the tap hole (think scab) that protects the tree.\u00a0 And also stops the sap flow.\u00a0\u00a0 Colder weather delays the onset of\u00a0 micro organisms thus keeping the sap flowing.<\/p>\n
